The Forgotten Salton Sea

The strange and sad Salton Sea was accidentally created between 1905 and 1907 when the Colorado River broke through diversion canals in the irrigation system of Imperial County. It lies about an hour and a half southeast of Palm Springs. It is not actually a sea but a geological depression tucked between mountain ranges and lying about 230 feet below sea level. The Salton Sea is mostly deserted now after flooding in 1976 buried the structures built during a building boom in the fifties and early sixties. Now the mostly abandon resorts and villages sit in a surreal state of limbo. There are many amazing photo opportunities around the salty dying lake and I fully intend to return to again to spend more time exploring the vast coastline.
